Sangria - Red Wine Sangria
Well you can’t really have a tapas party without several jugs of Sangria. This recipe is by Janet Mendel taken from page 272 of her book, “Tapas, A bite of Spain” published by Santana Books. We are selling Janet’s book, see our online shop.
Choose an inexpensive young red wine with no oak. You can use any combination of fruit, strawberries, oranges, apple, pear and grapes are all delicious. (Dilute the Sangria to taste with fizzy water).
Serves: 8 to 10
Ingredients
60g/20z/1/4 cup sugar
Strip of orange zest
240ml/8 fl oz/1 cup of water
500ml/1 pint/2 cups of chopped or sliced fruit
4 x tablespoons of brandy or liqueur such as Cointreau
1 x bottle chilled red wine
500ml/2 cups of chilled soda water
Preparation
Combine the sugar in a small saucepan with the zest and water. Bring to the boil and simmer for 2 minutes. Allow the sugar syrup to cool. Strain it into a pitcher. Discard the orange zest
Add the fruit and brandy into the pitcher.
The fruit can macerate, refrigerated, up to 2 hours.
Add the chilled red wine, Immediately before serving, add chilled soda water to taste.
